ASHES OF GRIEF
One set of footprints in the virgin snow.
Where they will lead only the angels know.
Why is it hazy up ahead, dear boy?
The morning light arrives, you said,
To shine on joy.
But here the tracks are mired in pools of red.
You may be gone. That doesn't prove you're dead.
Jimmy the window of belief. Slip out unnoticed like a thief.
And all you leave me are these ashes of grief.
I took a pill about an hour ago.
I'm feelin' ill, and don't know where to go.
My hair is tingling in a funny way.
Who's gonna crack the haze around my face
And show me the way to relief?
Don't want to lose you, but I had no choice.
I cried a protest. God ignored my voice.
I search for traces of you in the night.
Down twisted streets between the breweries.
A drunken charnel bum with ashes of grief.
One set of footprints in the virgin snow
Where they will lead only the virgins know
Why is it hazy up ahead, dear boy?
The morning light arrives, you said,
To shine on joy.
