(Go back)
SINGING IN CIRCLES
Some folks, when they reach the ocean
Think that’s just as far as they can go
Some, bedeviled by the sea,
Will hollow out a tree and set afloat
Still others settle on the shore
And gather sweet companions under wing
To make a circle round a fire
Where they aspire to help each other sing
A song that’s waiting to be found
But circles only go around
Sayounara, my darlings
This ship is outward bound
I loved a girl from Iowa
When I was but a decade in this life
One summer month of magic days
And had she stayed, she might’ve been my wife
Oh, distance made it easier
To disregard her letters and the tears
But through the wreckage and the tides of time and loss
This coward heart still hears
A song that’s waiting to be found
But lovers only go around
Sayounara, my darling
This ship is outward bound
Singing in circles, secrets revealed
Singing in circles, something is healed
That circles spin and grow, but stay in place
That is their charm, I know
They stay to gather blossoms,
Gather leaves, and grace
And all that gorgeous snow.
Was it yesterday
I found this boardwalk carousel
and climbed aboard?
Carny camaraderie
The comedy to melody restored
That won’t stop me going, even knowing
That the ocean’s other side
Is just another shore
From which to gaze back and adore
What’s left behind:
A song that’s waiting to be found
But circles only go around
Sayounara, my darlings
This ship is outward bound
